Our Mission
Why Z3LYX exists.

Our mission is to give people real clarity over what they put on their bodies — replacing confusing chemical labels with honest, sourced data, not manufactured outrage. By explaining ingredients in plain language, Z3LYX helps people make informed choices without needing a chemistry degree.

The Z3LYX Framework
Three pillars.

The '3' in Z3LYX stands for the three things every decision we make is built on.

01
Absolute Transparency
We explain ingredients under complicated chemical names in plain language. Every flag is tied to a named public source — a government agency classification or published research — not our own opinion. See exactly which source backs which claim on our Methodology page.
02
Consumer Health
Skin absorbs a meaningful share of what's applied to it. We help people make informed decisions before a product touches their skin, hair, or home — without diagnosing anyone or replacing real medical advice.
03
Honest Data Over Hype
When we don't have verified data on a product, we say so — instead of inventing a score. Live results are pulled from open databases; sample results are clearly labeled as illustrative demo data.
The Scale of the Problem
What's really in your bathroom cabinet.

The average person uses several personal care products every morning. Not every ingredient in them has the same level of independent long-term safety testing behind it — here's what published research actually shows.

56%
Of tested makeup products (foundation/eye) showed high fluorine, indicating likely PFAS — Univ. of Notre Dame / EWG, 2021
1,300+
Substances restricted or banned in EU cosmetics under Annex II — many remain permitted in the US
20+
Ingredient classes on our watch-list, each tied to a named public source
1938
Year the US last passed comprehensive cosmetic-safety legislation (FDCA), until MoCRA's 2022 updates
Common flagged ingredients
Polyethylene (PE) microbeads
Plastic microbeads once common in exfoliators. Banned from rinse-off cosmetics in the US under the 2015 Microbead-Free Waters Act, though not everywhere globally.
MICROPLASTIC | US LAW 2015
Oxybenzone
Common chemical sunscreen filter. Published research has found it can act as a weak hormone mimic and has been detected in human tissue; Hawaii and other jurisdictions have restricted it to protect coral reefs.
ENDOCRINE CONCERN | RESEARCH-BACKED
DMDM Hydantoin
A formaldehyde-releasing preservative — it slowly releases small amounts of formaldehyde, which IARC classifies as a Group 1 (confirmed) human carcinogen at sufficient exposure.
FORMALDEHYDE RELEASER | IARC GROUP 1
Fragrance / Parfum
A single label term that can legally bundle dozens of undisclosed compounds, since fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets under FDA rules.
UNDISCLOSED BLEND | FDA TRADE-SECRET RULE
What safe looks like
Zinc Oxide
Mineral sunscreen that sits on skin's surface rather than absorbing into the bloodstream. Marine and reef safe.
EWG VERIFIED SAFE | 1/10
Squalane
Plant-derived moisturiser that is chemically identical to the squalene naturally produced by human skin cells.
EWG SCORE 1/10
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Clinically proven to reduce inflammation, hyperpigmentation and strengthen the skin barrier safely.
CLINICALLY VALIDATED
Centella Asiatica
Botanical extract used for centuries. Promotes collagen synthesis and wound healing with an outstanding safety profile.

Z3LYX Scanner — Live Database + Barcode

Decode any label. Instantly.

Type a product name or scan a barcode. We check our sample database first, then search Open Food Facts / Open Beauty Facts — real, open product databases — for a live result with the actual product photo.

Camera scanning requires HTTPS or localhost — if it can't access your camera, just type the barcode digits into the search box instead.

Our Methodology

Science only. Zero opinion.

Every Z3LYX score is derived exclusively from government agency classifications and peer-reviewed research—never editorial judgment. When we flag an ingredient, we cite the authority that flagged it first. We are the messenger, not the author of the science.

01
Two layers of data, clearly labeled
Every result on Z3LYX carries a badge. LIVE DATA means the product name, photo, and ingredient list were pulled in real time from Open Food Facts / Open Beauty Facts — open, crowd-verified databases, not something we wrote. SAMPLE DATA means you're looking at one of our illustrative demo entries, built to show the interface, not a verified lab result.
02
Ingredient flags reflect published concerns, not our opinion
When an ingredient is flagged Caution or Flagged, it's because a recognized public-health body (FDA, EFSA, IARC, ECHA) or a widely used consumer research group (EWG) has published commentary about that class of ingredient — never because we decided a brand is "bad." We link the general concern to the general ingredient, and we don't invent specific numeric hazard scores for a specific product.
03
Consumer education, not diagnosis
Z3LYX is an educational tool. Bio-Scores and quiz results are simplified, illustrative estimates meant to build awareness — they are not medical advice, a lab measurement, or a regulatory finding. Real exposure biomonitoring comes from sources like the CDC's National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals.
04
Naming real products, responsibly
We reference real brand and product names so the tool is actually useful — but every specific claim about a specific product is tied to that product's own public ingredient list or open database entry, not to an invented or unverifiable claim. See our Legal page for our full terms, disclaimer, and IP policy.
05
Transparent Bio-Score formula
For live-data food products: the score blends Open Food Facts' own Nutri-Score and NOVA processing-group fields with our flagged-additive count. For cosmetics and sample entries: the score reflects roughly how many watch-listed ingredient classes appear on the label. The exact weighting is shown in each result's detail panel — nothing is hidden.
